Dear CTFA Member
In acknowledging the challenges associated with waste sector, government has made further commitments through various programmes, including the National Waste Management Strategy and the National Cleaner Production strategy for South Africa to promote waste minimisation initiatives with emphasis on industrial efficiency and increased recycling as part of the Industrial Policy Action Plan. The commitment to invest in waste management projects that divert waste from landfill sites through employment creating initiatives is further emphasised in the New Growth Path and the National Development Plan.
The Chemicals Management Workstream of the Chemicals and Waste Phakisa, Is to be held by the Department of Environmental Affairs from 23 July – 25 August 2017 which will focus on Waste Reduction, and Recycling and Re-Use of bulk Industrial Waste Workstreams addressing the below:
- Chemicals Management;
- Recycling and Re-use of Bulk Industrial Waste;
- Reduction of Waste; and
- Recycling and Re-use of General (Municipal) Waste.
The high-level objectives of the various workstreams are to determine how the chemicals and waste economy can contribute to reaching the Medium-Term Strategic Framework and NDP targets on Gross Domestic Product and Job Creation, while reducing the negative environmental and health impacts of chemicals and waste.
This initiative should be seen as an opportunity to raise challenges that are being experienced by industry in growing their companies. The Phakisa will be facilitated by DEA contractors, namely McKinsey and Company.
The CTFA will keep you periodically informed of updates pertaining to the above issues during the course of the Phakisa..
